Company Overview

In 2025, Air France-KLM received APEX 5-Star certification for the fourth consecutive year—an honor based on passenger feedback and operational performance data from more than one million flights. Of the 600+ airlines evaluated, only around 7% achieved 5-Star status.

Air France-KLM earned this distinction while advancing a major IT modernization and sustainability transformation, with a target of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 (compared to 2019).

At the same time, the group continues to expand and support a broad range of operations across its business units. While passengers know Air France-KLM for its flight experience, the company’s industry leadership extends well beyond passenger travel:

  • Air France-KLM operates one of the world’s leading maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) businesses, serving more than 200 airline customers.
  • It manages a dedicated air cargo business that requires coordination with hundreds of logistics partners.
  • It also provides ground-handling services for its own fleet as well as for other airlines at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

These operations must remain tightly connected and coordinated worldwide because disruption in one area can have ripple effects across the entire network.

Air France-KLM IT Operations helps ensure reliability across both AF/KLM data centers and public cloud environments.

“The workflows we manage to keep operations running smoothly are highly complex, and we need a very reliable solution to work efficiently,” says Christine Nespoulous, head of the Air France-KLM Automation & Continuous Delivery Competence Center. “We use Control-M as a cornerstone of our automation strategy because it enables our development teams to reliably orchestrate, manage, and monitor complex workflows across multiple business domains.”

Air France-KLM has used Control-M for more than 20 years, and its use continues to expand as the airline accelerates cloud adoption, DevOps practices, and real-time orchestration across hybrid cloud environments.

Use Cases: How Air France-KLM puts Control-M to work

Modernizing and decarbonizing in the cloud

Air France-KLM is driving greater efficiency by moving more of its IT systems to the cloud. The group is transitioning applications and data to a multicloud architecture built on Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

Christine Nespoulous and her team use Control-M as a bridge to the cloud, orchestrating workflows across both migrated and non-migrated applications. At the same time, they are transitioning Control-M itself from on-premises deployment to Control-M SaaS.

This move to SaaS enables Air France-KLM to align the platform with its cloud strategy while also taking advantage of modern DevOps capabilities. The team is supporting this transformation by enabling Jobs-as-Code, giving developers greater autonomy to build production-ready workflows directly into CI/CD pipelines using their preferred development environments.

“We are still finalizing some standards, but once that is complete, this approach will give our developers more autonomy,” says Nespoulous.

“I’m proud that our teams were able to upskill quickly and adopt new ways of working,” she adds. “It has been a great opportunity to gain agility and efficiency. Our developers will soon be more autonomous in delivering business workflows, and we’ve been empowered to deliver systems that are higher quality, more reliable, and faster to market.”

Automating workflow orchestration in the cloud is not only reducing friction in the CI/CD process—it is also helping reduce the environmental impact of Air France-KLM’s operations. A smooth transition to cloud infrastructure supports the group’s plans to decommission data centers and optimize resource usage.

“Our core business is transporting passengers, moving cargo, and maintaining fleets—not running data centers,” says Nespoulous. “By migrating to the cloud, we can scale resources more efficiently and avoid unnecessary energy consumption.”

The workflows we manage to keep operations running smoothly are highly complex, and we need a very reliable solution to work efficiently. We use Control-M as a cornerstone of our automation strategy because it enables our development teams to reliably orchestrate, manage, and monitor complex workflows across multiple business domains.
